WDE Nov. 18

Week-end Drawing Event at Wet Canvas this week-end posted a photo of Dewi's Grand Nephew. I had fun painting the skin tones -- but do not have the proportions right at all. It was a young child and my painting looks like a teen-ager. I'm not sure why -- any suggestions?

WOWOWOW Penny!!! I LOVE the skintones .. and the face! IT has a wonderful painterly quality I'm trying to find for myself .. I LOVE IT!!!

As for rendering children's faces? Mercy, my own struggle ... my grands look like teens too ... I don't know .. maybe I'm thinning the 'childhood fat' in their cheeks? something like that .. maybe yours too? I don't know .. but I do love the colors in this so much!

Baby fat... It's baby fat. The slimmer your face is the older it makes the child. Ask me how I know this? I just can't get mine young enough either. I always age them too much. Sigh... But hey, at least I could answer your question because of it!

i have a problem with drawing children too and I think one of the reasons is that the gap between features and their size differ. the eyes are bigger and you've got that right. i usually just cannot draw them bigger or end up with them too big. the nose is usually shorter and hence a bit wider. and the mouth i'm not too sure about in terms of size as compared with an adult.

I was told in college while drawing from life that i had to check and recheck each feature not by itself but in relation to other features eg. the nose compared to the ear and the eyes for size, placement. we were told to drop imaginary lines say from the eyes to the nose or the base of the ear to the nose and check if the nose was correctly positioned. but the thing that I think has helped me the most is making portraits regularly.

I have some links on drawing and painting on my website in case you are interested. This one is a online software showing the muscle changes based on expressions.

I forgot to add that I love the way you've used watercolors for this portrait. It's the one medium that I havent used other than for washes. And I hope to join you on WDE soon.
